Best fit
Guests who prefer independent venues, drag, live performance and a more intimate crowd.
Independent · Inclusive · Neighbourhood-led
Haebangchon, usually shortened to HBC, is a steep neighbourhood of independent bars, restaurants, performances and close-knit nightlife. It feels more local and room-led than a conventional club district.
Why this district feels different
Haebangchon means “Liberation Village”. The hillside settlement grew after Korea’s liberation in 1945 as people returning from abroad and, later, refugees displaced by the Korean War made homes below Namsan.
Workers, small businesses, international residents and creative communities added new layers over time. The result is a neighbourhood whose modern bars and restaurants sit inside streets shaped by migration and resilience.

Choose HBC when you care more about a distinctive room, performance or community than a giant dance floor. The appeal is in moving between small independent spaces and letting each venue set a different tone.

Small rooms, steep lanes and a friendly mix of local and international regulars.
HBC is hilly and the core is not directly beside a subway station. Wear practical shoes and plan your arrival.
