Haebangchon:
small streets, big personality.

Haebangchon, usually shortened to HBC, is a steep neighbourhood of independent bars, restaurants, performances and close-knit nightlife. It feels more local and room-led than a conventional club district.

Why this district feels different

Liberation Village, built on arrival and reinvention

Haebangchon means “Liberation Village”. The hillside settlement grew after Korea’s liberation in 1945 as people returning from abroad and, later, refugees displaced by the Korean War made homes below Namsan.

Workers, small businesses, international residents and creative communities added new layers over time. The result is a neighbourhood whose modern bars and restaurants sit inside streets shaped by migration and resilience.

How the neighbourhood became this

A short history of
Haebangchon.

  1. 01

    After 1945

    A village after liberation

Returning Koreans established temporary homes on the slopes below Namsan, giving the settlement its name.
  2. 02

    Korean War era

    A refuge on the hillside

People displaced from the north and elsewhere expanded the community, often building with limited materials on difficult terrain.
  3. 03

    Later 1900s

    Workers and small local businesses

The neighbourhood developed through modest housing, workshops, markets and the daily life of people arriving in Seoul for work.
  4. 04

    2010s to today

    Regeneration without losing the lanes

Independent hospitality and creative businesses brought new attention while the old market, stairways and dense street pattern retained the area’s identity.
