Why this district feels different

Seoul’s bell street, layered across centuries

Jongno grew along the civic and commercial spine of the Joseon capital. Its name means “bell street”, recalling Bosingak and the bell that once marked the opening and closing of the city gates.

The district still compresses different eras into a few streets. Open-air pochas, Ikseon-dong’s hanok lanes, Nakwon’s music culture, bright Jonggak blocks and a long-established queer nightlife community all meet after dark.

How the neighbourhood became this

A short history of
Jongno.

  1. 01

    1394

A central axis for the new capital

When the Joseon capital moved to Hanyang, the road through modern Jongno became a core civic, commercial and everyday route.
  2. 02

    1398

    The street with a bell

Bosingak’s bell regulated the rhythm of the walled city, and Jongno’s name is believed to have been used from this period.
  3. 03

    1897–1919

A park and a movement in the city centre

Tapgol Park opened as Seoul’s first modern park and later became a starting point for the March First Independence Movement.
  4. 04

    1920s to today

Hanok lanes, music and nights out

Ikseon-dong’s compact homes, Nakwon Arcade, food streets and discreet nightlife communities added new layers without erasing the old street pattern.

Jongno after dark

Street food, old lanes and several different nights

Choose Jongno when you want an evening that begins with food and conversation, then changes character by street. Jongno 3-ga is casual and open-air, Ikseon-dong is more polished early in the evening, Jonggak is brighter and busier, and Seosulla-gil offers a quieter route beside Jongmyo’s wall.

01

Best fit

Visitors who want Korean food culture, historic streets and a mixed night rather than one large club district.

02

Expect

Pochas, hanok restaurants and bars, busy commercial streets and discreet late-night communities close together.

03

Know before you go

The atmosphere changes sharply by block. Pick the part of Jongno that suits your group and use an exact meeting landmark.
