Seongsu:
industry, design and sound after dark.

Seongsu’s former workshops and brick industrial spaces now sit beside design stores, restaurants, bars and electronic culture. It suits visitors who want a creative evening rather than a conventional bar-to-club district.

Why this district feels different

An industrial neighbourhood remade without losing its bones

Seongsu developed through manufacturing, repair work and specialist craft. Its handmade-shoe cluster became especially important from the 1970s, leaving workshops, suppliers and industrial buildings across the district.

Those structures later became part of the attraction. Cafes, design studios, restaurants, pop-ups and cultural rooms reused the old fabric, creating a neighbourhood where production history and contemporary culture still share the same streets.

How the neighbourhood became this

A short history of
Seongsu.

  1. 01

    1960s–1970s

    Factories and workshops move east

Manufacturers and small workshops leaving central Seoul helped Seongsu grow organically as an industrial district, with red-brick factories becoming part of its streetscape.
  2. 02

    1980s–1990s

    Specialist clusters take shape

Shoemaking, printing, auto repair and component businesses formed dense local networks, many of which continued even as industry later declined.
  3. 03

    2005

    Seoul Forest opens nearby

The new urban park reshaped the wider Ttukseom and Seongsu area, bringing more visitors and a different kind of public life to the riverside district.
  4. 04

    2014 to today

    Regeneration without erasing industry

Urban regeneration and private reuse brought cafes, restaurants, studios, pop-ups and cultural venues into older buildings while working industry remained nearby.

Seongsu after dark

A destination evening built around the neighbourhood

Seongsu rewards visitors who come for the neighbourhood itself: red-brick workshops, converted warehouses, design-led complexes, restaurants and bars spread between Seoul Forest and the eastern streets. After dark, some spaces become quieter while destination bars and programmed cultural rooms keep the district moving.
