Why this district feels different

A gateway district shaped by movement

Itaewon did not become international overnight. Its position on routes south of old Seoul, followed by the long military presence in Yongsan, repeatedly brought travellers, soldiers, merchants and new communities through the area.

That history still shows after dark. The district is less defined by one music style or one type of guest than by the number of different scenes packed into neighbouring streets.

How the neighbourhood became this

A short history of
Itaewon.

  1. 01

    Joseon era

A station on the road south

The name is connected to an official inn or station serving travellers leaving the capital towards the southern provinces.
  2. 02

    Post-1945

    An international commercial district forms

Foreign military and diplomatic communities in Yongsan helped shape a distinctive shopping, dining and entertainment economy.
  3. 03

    1980s onward

From tourism zone to nightlife landmark

Tourism designation and global attention around the Seoul Olympics accelerated Itaewon’s reputation as one of the city’s most internationally accessible districts.
  4. 04

    Today

    Many scenes, one compact area

Cocktail bars, queer venues, restaurants, pubs and dance floors now sit within a district that continues to change and remember its past.
